MCA Meeting at the NYINC

The MCA will hold its 2023 winter meeting at the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC) in New York City. The meeting will take place at 11:30 AM on Saturday, January 14, in the Astor Suite I at the InterContinental New York Barclay Hotel. Douglas Mudd, Curator & Museum Director of the ANA Edward C. Rochette Money Museum, will give a talk on "The Medal in America: Medals and American History".

The Edward C. Rochette Money Museum’s newest exhibit is not primarily about medals in an art historical sense – it is about how medals can tell the stories of the United States. Medals are used to tell the story of American history beginning with the first medal to reference the New World - a big step away from the more usual art history approach to medal exhibits where the artists and the art of the medals is a primary topic. There are parts of the exhibit which focus on the art and history of medals, how they are made and the artists who create them - but the balance is about the stories medals can tell us about American history, including famous battles and leaders to social, political and institutional events and people behind them, whether as commemorations, propaganda or protest or even just for fun or beauty in modern art. Join me as we explore the exhibit!
