MCA Meeting at the NYINC

The MCA will hold its 2024 winter meeting at the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC) in New York City. The meeting will take place at 11:30 AM on Saturday, January 13, in the Astor Suite I at the InterContinental New York Barclay Hotel. Neil Musante will give a talk on "The Early Medal Making Business at the US Mint".

Congress never authorized the striking of medals as a function of the United States Mint. The talk will review the story of how medals first came to be struck at the Mint and how this "function" was initially operated as a private business. One that ran fairly smoothly in the beginning but over time, turned into something of an embarrassment that led to the replacement of the Mint director and the firing of the Chief Coiner. Lots of illustrations of medals with previously unconsidered back stories. Program rated PG-17. Possible nudity and definitely strong language.
